Reasons for Tooth Extraction

There are physical factors that make tooth preservation impossible, making extraction the only viable option. Of course, we discuss this in detail with patients and review all possible options before extraction. Common reasons include:

Severe infection causing dental abscess Overcrowded teeth Loose or damaged teeth due to gum disease Physical trauma Preparation for orthodontic treatment Problematic teeth like wisdom teeth

Extraction Due to Tooth Decay

One of the most common reasons for extraction is severe decay. Sometimes a tooth can be so affected that it can't be saved through other dental procedures like fillings or root canal treatment. In such cases, we must remove the affected tooth, as severely decayed or damaged teeth can cause not only pain and discomfort but also infections and oral complications.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction and Surgery

Wisdom teeth typically appear in young adulthood. However, there's often insufficient space in the mouth, leading to various problems. Therefore, we may recommend preventive wisdom tooth removal.

There are numerous reasons for wisdom tooth surgery. For example, if there's insufficient space, they may press against neighboring teeth, causing pain. The back teeth are also very difficult to keep clean, making decay common. Their emergence can even shift existing teeth, disrupting proper alignment.

After Tooth Extraction

To prevent infections and ensure quick healing, we recommend the following after extraction:

Avoid rinsing mouth for 24 hours No eating or drinking while numbness persists After 24 hours, rinse with warm salt water or special mouthwash twice daily for several days

Avoid strenuous activities for 1-2 days depending on extraction Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours

Avoid the area while eating for a few days, but keep the extraction site clean with gentle brushing
Soft diet and room-temperature foods/drinks recommended

For pain, take ibuprofen or paracetamol-containing medication for up to 2 days

Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

Missing teeth can be replaced using bridges, dentures, and implants. These options vary for each person depending on patient needs, condition of remaining adjacent teeth, bone quality and quantity, and many other factors. However, it's clear that in adulthood, missing teeth should be replaced as soon as possible.
